What Do Good Readers Do?

What Do Good Readers Do

When I am reading both informational text and Literature I tend to do a lot of highlighting and writing in the margins. I highlight information so I can quickly reference it as needed but I also write my take on the portion I have highlighted so I can remember why I highlighted it in the first place. I also tend to ask questions I may have in the margins or things I may be confused about so I can ask the question later (if the selection is for a class) or I can look it up later (if it is personal reading). I also tend to underline words with a definition or topic headers so I can quickly look at them and see what it is I was reading during discussions of the text or if I need to reference it quickly for papers.

Good readers are:

Mentally prepared to think outside the box.
Motivated by the literature they are reading.
Socially open to reading about new subjects.
Strategically prepared to take notes and listen.
Monitoring new words and vocabulary.
Connecting with their peers on the text.
Coordinating project based learning with their classmates.

Good writers are:

Mentally prepared to be open with their ideas.
Motivated to create something new with their writing.
Socially accepting to everyone's writing and discourses.
Strategic in the way they plan their writing.
Monitoring their writing in ways that improve their points and arguments.
Connecting with their peers through the writing process.
Coordinating stories and learning from other's.

  1. Kathryn,
I also do a lot of highlighting and underlining when I am reading a text. I have found that this helps me filter out and differentiate information and knowledge that I do not understand or that I already know. Also I agree that good readers are motivated by the literature they read. Personally, if I am not motivated to read a literature I find it easy to get distracted and just kind of skim through what I am reading.

    1. I think it's super important to remember that not all students will be into the same books and literature but there are those books kids just love and I think we should always try to slip those into the curriculum. Highlighting and underlining is so helpful! Especially with those really dense readings that can happen sometimes.
